convert label:"X" 0.png Works fine for me on IM 6.9.6.-6 Mac OSX SnowLeopard. What happens if you specify a font rather than take the default. Perhaps your system has no default font set. Gives the same error with a font spec. I would have been much surprised if it were different, because...

Did you do -size 72x or just 72? The former should work also. Nevertheless, it seems likely there is a bug in that version. Perhaps you should talk with your Linux OS developers and see if they can put out a new distribution with a more current version of Imagemagick. Both don't work. Thanks for yo...
