By posterization I actually meant color quantization.
Thanks for the explanation Fred, I will run some more tests and probably come back for more questions.
@snibgo: The actual images are png. I will experiment.

Re: segmentation of balloons
The sorting now works fine, thanks. But connected components in only for thresholded images, right? Your second post in this thread is what an implementation of the histogram color with the most counts right? The posterization doesn't work well with other images, e.g. a light gray that gets mixed wi...

Re: segmentation of balloons
Actually the sed/sort snippet needs some fiddling because it lists two digits before three digits (99 before 113). I also came up with these: a. Is it possible to check for the color that is most scattered or "all over the place" (for a lack of a better word)? I want to identify the color ...

Re: segmentation of balloons
Thanks Fred, that's what I wanted. I thought there might be a way for IM to spit it out, without using external tools, but that's fine.

Re: segmentation of balloons
No, I meant the output should be the column (x of the image) that has the maximum value.

Re: segmentation of balloons
Nice!
I meant scale to one row but it's simple to change that(1x! vs !x1).
How can I get the max value out of text_balloons_binary_column.png?

Re: segmentation of balloons
I searched for it and it's called vertical (or horizontal) projection histograms. Example: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Davide_Baltieri/publication/220929862/figure/fig1/AS:305603944697856@1449873066016/Fig-1-Vertical-and-Horizontal-Projection-histograms-of-a-sample-blob.png https://stackove...

Re: segmentation of balloons
Ah then I meant something whose output looks like a histogram, I think it's called vertical projections (where it sums all the pixels of a specific y). What do you think?
Is there anything that can do that?

Re: segmentation of balloons
Hm, I thought of a histogram approach because the balloons of user1 start at the same "x" coordinates. Same with user2. Maybe crop 20% of the image on the left and the right and do some kind of histogram analysis (e.g. most pixels start at x=20)? Alternatively perform hough transform (to f...

Re: segmentation of balloons
Thanks!
Doesn't seem to work very well on the others, if you think of an alternative way let me know!

Re: segmentation of balloons
Thanks Fred!
What about the gray regions (user2)?
Also what if I don't know the color of the balloons beforehand, e.g. #509DFB ?
Edit: it's ok if the tip of the balloon is not included or even if they are cropped into rectangular regions (instead of a rounded rectangle).

segmentation of balloons
Hi wizards, How can I get the bbox info of the region of interest of a conversation balloon in messenger apps? Different for user1 and user2. Example image 1: https://cornerplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/screenshot_2014-08-11-01-46-30.png Example image 2: http://2.media.collegehumor.cvcdn.com/80/6...
