Want to convert a folder full exr files to 16 bit TIF files

Post by jpjapers »

Hi, Im new to this software and ive read through a little documentation regarding convert and mogrify.

Am i right in thinking i need to compile this from source to be able to work with 32 bit EXR files and if so, why is this the case? What is the reason behind not hosting an already compiled installer with HDRI support?

Thanks in advance!

ImageMagick is compiled by default to 16-bit HDRI. So you can process data that is negative or has fractional values.

Ok but if theres the option for 32bit images would it not just be alot simpler for users to be able to download the 32 bit capable version too?
Visual studio is currently a 20GB download and its just to compile this source...

The Q16 HDRI builds of IM can generally read and write some 32-bit files (eg TIFF format). IM can read 32-bit FP EXR files. However, as far as I know, no version of IM can write 32-bit EXR files. When writing EXR, IM is limited to 16-bit files.

Ok so would this mean i can open 32Bit EXRs and save as 16 Bit TIFFs?
Because ive not had much luck with it yet but it could completely be down to my understanding of the scripting.
This could be completely futile now anyway as ive discovered that i need to access some of the EXR metadata and im not sure if imagemagick can do that.

Yes, you can save as 16-bit or 32-bit, FP or integer, TIFFs. You may need "-define quantum:format=floating-point -depth 32" or whatever.
