CompositeImage final resolution

Hi there!
Is anybody out there who can explain me the relation of the resolutions (PPI) of two pictures that I merge by using the command "compositeimage"? How (if?) can I influence the PPIs? I know, the PPIs do not matter for web purposes, but I try to merge pictures that will finally get printed. Therefore resolution matters a lot to me. I get always quite different PPI reults and was not able to figure why.
