I know little more about pdfimages. But I see no point in putting the extracted raster image back into a PDF vector shell. You will likely get the same degradation as in the original PDF file.

Thank you. So I woulds leave it as png files as indicated in the command.

Yes, that is my recommendation. I do not think you can make it any better unless you rescan the document at a higher resolution/density.

Yes. Thank you so much. I am going to re scan the 60's newspaper at higher resolution.
May I ask you a favor if you would not mind, would you please take a quick look to see if the 1980's article is OK enough that I could perform our imagemagick function without rescan it.
