When you compile and install a new version of ImageMagick under Linux, the default install prefix is /usr/local. So you would expect to find the convert program as /usr/local/bin/convert. If /usr/local is not in your shell execution path before /usr/bin, if you type convert it will locate the older version. You can uninstall the old version, fix your execution path to check /usr/local/bin first or call the new version with an absolute path of /usr/local/bin/convert.
