compatible with php 5.1.6?

I've seen a number of references to problems with running MagickWand for PHP on PHP 5.1.6. Unfortunately that's the PHP version I'm running on my site. Is MagickWand incompatible with this version? I haven't seen a clear explanation of the issue.
