Two books are listed on the home page. How current are they with respect to today's imagmagick?
Is one preferred to the other?

Both books are current with ImageMagick. We've added a few new features discussed in here: http://www.imagemagick.org/Usage/ . The definitive guide seems to get the most positive feedback from users.

I can agree with that. However both books fall short on the range of posiblilities available with IM.

The pointed to IM Examples is a good thing to go though, especially the first few pages in each the the two columns as a starting point.

It is getting better and better, especially with people telling about problems or 'rough' areas that could use more work.
